Allen Cunningham Biography
Allen Cunningham was born in Riverside, California on March 28th, 1977. He began playing poker and many other card games at a young age and proved to be the rounder of the family constantly beating anyone who would take him on. Even though Cunningham was a good card player as a child it was during his college years at UCLA that he really got into the game. Between classes Cunningham would spend a lot of time at the local tribal casino winning a few bucks here and there at the low stake cash games.
It was in Cunningham’s second year at college that he really blossomed into a winning player. He was able to jump up to the $10/$20 tables after some key small buy-in tournament wins and consistently beating the low limit cash games. At 21 Cunningham wanted to test himself against the best so he decided to play in some of the major tournaments around the West Coast. Allen didn’t find success right away, but he was able to build group of friends that included Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu who would help each other improve.
At the Legends of Poker series at the Bicycle Casino Cunningham had his coming out party. He won 2 events and made 6 final tables to get everyone’s attention. Allen’s first bracelet came just 2 years later when he won the $5K seven card stud tournament at the 2001 WSOP. He also had 3 other cashes that year and in 2002 he did it all over again with a second bracelet and a total of 4 cashes. Allen now has 5 WSOP gold bracelets and 41 total WSOP cashes under his belt. His biggest cash came when he came fourth in the 2006 WSOP main event. Allen went into the final day second in chips and he fancied his chances against the chip leader and soon to be champion Jamie Gold, but it wasn’t to be. Allen had to settle for only $3.6 Million. This chunk of change makes up a good portion of Allen’s approximately $8 Million career tournament winnings.
Allen is a very quiet, mild mannered poker player, but his success at the tables has not gone unnoticed. Allen has been invited to be on many poker shows including Poker After Dark, where he won the $300,000 mega match.
